Yvolina's Tamales is a casual tamale shop and restaurant tucked into the South Loop neighborhood of Chicago. This spot centers its charm on hearty, thoughtfully crafted tamales with a variety of fillings that range from classic chicken and pork to more adventurous vegan and vegetarian options featuring mole sauces and fresh vegetables. It’s the kind of place where the masa—the tamale’s dough—stands out for its moist, tender texture, a detail that local diners often appreciate and mention.

The atmosphere is straightforward and unpretentious, with seating that supports a relaxed meal rather than a formal dining experience. This makes Yvolina’s a go-to for a laid-back lunch or an early dinner, especially for those who want a filling, flavorful meal to refuel during a busy South Loop day. You’re likely to encounter a friendly crew behind the counter, making it a welcoming spot whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or savoring the nuances of their mole sauces and tamale varieties.

While the shop is not designed for late-night dining, its proximity to local markets means it feels connected to the community’s rhythm. Many people find themselves stopping by after a farmers market stroll or a nearby event, drawn by the savory smell of freshly made tamales and cooling drinks like kale lemonade or horchata. Portions tend to be generous, with dinner combinations that fill you up without a fuss.

Yvolina’s also attracts people looking for vegetarian or vegan tamales, offering several creative choices with ingredients like eggplant, spinach, and soy-based options, all paired with a variety of green and red moles that add layers of flavor. For those who aren’t ready to settle on just one, dinner plates offer a chance to sample multiple tamales alongside fresh sides, making it a practical stop for diverse groups or families.

This isn’t a place to linger with a lengthy meal but rather one to enjoy a straightforward, flavorful local specialty in a friendly and no-frills environment. If you appreciate tamales that are moist and filled with rich, authentic flavors and want to experience a slice of Chicago’s neighborhood food landscape, Yvolina’s Tamales offers exactly that. Best times to visit are midday or early evening when the kitchen is at its freshest, and the seating is available without rush.

Never had a tamale or mole here that I did not like. The green juice is incredible. Everything is so flavorful and worth every penny. My only qualm is I wish they were open a little later so I could snag some dinner on my way home from work :)

The most DELICIOUS guacamole and chips, tamales , and horchata’s!! I discovered Yvolina’s Tamales at the South Loop night market/farmers market and was thrilled to see the restaurant is not far from the South Loop at all! The poblano tamale is HUGE and the masa is sooo delicious, it’s the best I’ve tasted for sure the guac is addicting, and I only wish there were much larger containers for it because it’s the best in the city to me the chips are so much better than anything sold at the store, I wish they were sold in stores for the convenience of getting them more often lol. And the horchata is so sweetly refreshing it is another one I wish I could get a larger size to enjoy I saw they have vegan tamales in one of the reviews, so now I’m even more happy the restaurant is so close! I highly recommend stopping by their booth in the farmers market at the Roosevelt Collection on Thursday’s or the actual restaurant which is a short drive down Halsted off Roosevelt if you’re coming from the South Loop.

First time here! Just walked out of this place so satisfied & yummy full! Tried the chicken tinga & poblano tamales both dinner style & it was such a unique but delicious meal!! My husband commented on how moist the tamales were! We hate dry tamales! Haha. We also got to try the kale limonade made in house & that was so refreshing! (Not pictured bc my son was drinking it) Their waiter & waitress were very welcoming, she let me try the mole sauces before deciding which one I wanted as my topping. They sell jars of their homemade mole sauces, so we took two home! Definitely recommend!!

Ok everyone. Your local Chicago's Cook is back. This time eating some of Halsteds favorite Tamal's!! This place has it. The flavor is there, and the chicken was masterfully cooked and wasnt dry at all!! I totally went back for a second Chicken Tinga Tamal! I will be coming back as i want to try their Mole next time!!! With that said, only $8 per Tamal so very worth it due to tbeir size and yes the filling is there!!. My only sad truth was the hours. 11-6pm. It doesnt leave much for a dinner crowd. However if you can get there then do so!!! It eill leave you full, and coming back for more. They even have fresh Horchata and drinks!!

Delicious! I love oaxacan style tamales and these are perfect. I had the quinoa and lentils and green mole which was so cozy and full of flavor. I hope they add more vegan tamales because they are one of the few places with no lard!

I tried the tamal de rajas con queso with mole rojo, plus rice, beans, and the cauliflower ceviche. The tamal was delicious. The rice, beans, and ceviche were tasty but not spectacular. The mole rojo was a bit too salty for my taste. The biggest downside was that the restaurant didn’t have AC running, so it was pretty uncomfortable sitting in the heat. I’ll definitely be back for the tamales, but next time I’ll do takeout.

When I’m sad I travel to the Westside and unwrap tamales like gifts to myself. This right here the chicken green w/ green mole. It doesn’t solve my problems but I definitely forget about them when eating here. This is my second time coming. When I say this tamal heals a little piece of me… I travel for about an hour. It’s worth it
